Inside Under Armour's New Global Headquarters

When a brand as synonymous with performance as Under Armour sets out to build a new global headquarters, the building itself must perform. It must look, feel, and function like an athlete: engineered for peak performance, built to last, and unmistakably branded. 

 

That's exactly what Under Armour and architecture firm Gensler set out to achieve with the company's new home in Baltimore, and Axis Lighting is proud to have been part of it.

More Than a Workspace 

Located on the Baltimore Peninsula, Under Armour's global headquarters is both a workplace and a statement of the brand. Built with cross-laminated timber, the facility was designed to meet LEED and WELL Platinum standards while targeting net-zero carbon and net-zero energy operations. 

 

Geothermal heating and cooling, solar power, rainwater harvesting, optimized shading, and mass timber construction work together to reduce the building's environmental impact. 

 

It is a headquarters designed around performance, sustainability, and the future of the brand.

Where Architecture Meets Illumination 

That's where Axis Lighting's StencilFlex® came in. 

 

Throughout the building's open-ceiling spaces, the exposed timber structure remains visible by design. Lighting a ceiling like that presents a unique challenge: how do you deliver clean, high-performance illumination without hiding the very structure the architecture is designed to showcase? 

 

StencilFlex's patented line-voltage delivery framework gave the design team the flexibility to do exactly that. Rather than working around the exposed timber, the lighting system works with it, creating a suspended, scalable framework that layers light through the open architecture without competing with it

 

Multiple StencilFlex configurations were deployed throughout the site, creating a dynamic visual language that echoes the energy of an athletic facility while remaining visually integrated with the timber structure above. 

 

Beyond aesthetics, the system also contributed to the project's performance goals. Its simplified approach to lighting power density compliance helped support the building's ambitious sustainability targets, an important consideration for a project pursuing net-zero energy operations and LEED Platinum certification. 

 

Beam 3 recessed fixtures were also used in the elevators, complementing StencilFlex and helping create a cohesive lighting approach throughout the building.

Engineered for What's Next

Under Armour's global headquarters is a compelling example of architecture, sustainability, and brand identity working in alignment, and the lighting had to rise to meet that standard.

 

With StencilFlex, Axis Lighting helped transform an exposed timber ceiling into an integrated lighting system that supports the building's performance goals as much as its visual identity.

It's a fitting home for a brand built on the pursuit of peak performance, one designed to inspire Under Armour's teammates and the Baltimore community for generations to come.
