Over the bed but not directly over the patient
The center ceiling area over the patient bed is often precious real estate needed for other equipment, such as a lift rail. But mounting a pair of luminaires (or a single fixture) outboard of the bed also has other practical advantages. The light source is not positioned directly in the patient’s line of sight. And the asymmetric illumination means that someone standing on the side of the bed – like a caregiver – does not cast a shadow on the bed.
